I am a faithful follower of the Daily Om website. I find the articles inspiring and a good guidance in self reflection. Recently, I came across this exercise called Five Things. *
I think that this is indeed a good exercise in self-esteem. We all agree that we are a generation that is not afraid of going for what we want in life. And we often place much emphasis in external judgements. What people think of us. How do we appear physically? That's why look good industries will always thrive. But what people think of us are not what we really are.
*
In the above simple exercise, we are encouraged to write down at least five things everyday on what we like about ourselves. Who we really truly are deep inside. And do this for a week.
*
I encourage my good readers to join this exercise to start the week with inner reflection.
*
Here's my five things to start with:
1) I am not afraid to speak my mind if I feel that the truth will bring about benefit to others and to myself;
2) I am considerate to the feelings of others;
3) I am a long distance runner. Once I set my goal, I might not be the first to reach it, but I will somehow;
4) I believe in being true to myself;
5) I accept myself for who I am, my body-build, my age, my strengths and weakness.
*
What's yours? Care to share your good five things with me?

21 Ripples:
Come to think of it, I may have some self esteem issues. It comes and goes though.
Ah...I've written a post the other week in my blog about self-esteem. It's kinda hard to have self-esteem when you're just learning a new language in a foreign language and you're looking for employment.
My five things? Hmmm...I have to think about that first he he...but at least one of them is that I'm eager to learn (Finnish in this case). :-D
Ting,
As we age and hopefully in a graceful manner, one of the most important thing is to be at ease with who we are and what we want out of life. That, my humble view, serves as an anchor of our own self esteem.
I really like this exercise as it encourages one to go deeper within oneself. Ultimately our life is really about who we are deep inside and who others want us to be or think of us. Right?
Have a Great Week ahead!
Amel,
Asians are generally uncomfortable voicing out our own good points. From one point it is virtuous to be humble. But I feel that this exercise encourages us to go deep within to see if we are comfortable with ourselves. If we accept ourselves. Even if one does not "annouce" it out to other like how I have unashamedly written out in this post, I find it essential that one knows or finds time to reflect on it quietly and alone.
May this exercise be of help to you as much as it has benefitted me.
Your new home is looking great and cosy. You must be thrilled in your new home heh?
I don't think you're blowing your own horns by writing out your list, Karen. I also don't think you're being braze in doing that. You make me think and that's good he he...
Hi Karen, let me know if you want the crochet instruction for the Gecko bookmark, I can send it to you :)
Here's my list (and I don't think it's just Asians who find it hard to voice their good points).
1. I am diligent (I know this, because I have a job that requires it).
2. I make people happy (I know this, because of the comments on my blog; and because I've been told in my reviews at work).
3. I can write.
4. I can cook.
5. I can create.
Amel -- you might add to your list that you are courageous to take on a job hunt and a new language!
Amel,
You are always sooo encouraging. :-)
Just saw the snowy pics that you put up in your good blog. You really look one happy girl.
