Feline Dilemma

My hubby loves cats. The stray cats near where I used to stay with my mom before I got married are all very fond of him. He does not give them anything to eat. He merely strokes their bodies and talk to them in "meow-uage" which I can't comprehend. There was once when I was chatting with him below my block after dinner. As we sat on one of the benches in the playground, one of his favourite cats (we named her Brownie, by the way) came over and saunter around him. To our surprise, she leaped onto my hubby's lap, adjusted herself for a while to comfortable position and settled there. She stayed there for close to half an hour! I thought she was going to just sleep there!

Our new apartment would be ready in about a month's time. Hubby has been talking about getting a kitten for our new home. I am not as passionate about cats as he is. But I am not against this idea though. My blog buddies Marzie, Ting, have such nice pets for companionship!

Until very recently, I read of Soul's beloved Midnight being put to sleep. As I read her posts following this very heart-breaking event for her family, I recalled what my hubby said to me once. That he had always wanted to keep a pet since young, but knowing that he would probably outlive the pet and had to witness it's death, that caused him to push the idea back again and again.

Alas! No matter how learned we can get, attachment to the familiar is something that is beyond our control. As I share the grief of Soul's family (+ her cats and dogs), I am thinking twice about that Plan Kitten.

Should I?

Animals use their instincts to tell them whether a person is good or not. It shows you have married a good and kind man. For the same reason, animals always go to CH wherever he goes. I am very to see that :-)

I think you shouldn't can the idea of keeping a cat. The joys of having a pet and their unconditional love for their owners is beyond description. As owners, we have to cope when the day they go. We won't grief forever but they good memories will stay with us for life.

Hi Ting!!

Yups, the whole litter of them would just come around him whenever we go near.

Looking at home much he loves cats, we probably will go ahead with this plan.

Happy Friday!

that "attachment" is what makes us human...dont let that factor stop you...get that little cutie!

I'm in the midst of planning to get a dog, so I'd say go for it.

The fear of outliving your pet is always there but if you had a good life with your pet, they you'll know it was all worth it.

For me, death is a part of life.

Happy weekend WaterLearner.

hello, it's my 1st time visiting ur blog. I love ur header! how did u do that?

WaterLearner said...

Hi Jyankee!

Haha.. I think we will most probably go ahead! Yeah.. It's detachment. Most humans fall prey in this weakness. Somewhat unknowingly!

WaterLearner said...

Nick!

You are planning for a dog? Actually I would prefer a dog to a cat. But hubs thinks that a cat is easier to maintain compared to a dog. So most probably would have to settle for a cat.

Show me that photo of the doggie when you get it, ok?

I never have a pet in my life... I have some cats when I was teenager but they just come and go... come to eat and sleep and go somewhere to play... so I never have an attachment with them. I often go for holidays for several days, I wonder who will take care of the pet if we are not at home? So we never want any pet besides an aquarium..:-) fish can live without given food for a week.. LOL

Hi Trinn,

I am not good with fishes. When I was small, I remember having goldfish. Somehow or other, they died very quickly. And they really look horrible when dead.

Well, my Mom didn't allow us to have a cat until one day a cat won her heart. She literally couldn't resist. Finally we got our own cat!!! It was sad when he got sick and then left as though he didn't want us to see him die...but his memories stay strong in our minds. He gave us MANY fun moments. We loved playing with them and my Mom also loved him, too. We all shed tears when he left to die. But it's all worth it. It was worth it to make that cat happy, even only for a little while...because he also brought us happiness and laughter! ;-D

Well if u go on with the plan to keep the cat, at least during its lifetime, u got the chance to give it full of happiness and laughter right? And when the time comes for it to go, u won't have to live with all that regret for not taking care of it.

Life is too short for us, and way shorter for all these adorable kitties, so they would want to be as happy as can be and perhaps u can do that for them. =)

So go on with the plan ok? =)=)=)

wl--
thanks for your thoughts, and words to me and my family--

but ya know what? don't let fear of loss keep you from something you love..or your hubby loves. a pet will bring you joy that is not speakable. the enter your soul in a way that a human cannot.

death is inevitable.. be it an animal.. or a person. you wouldn't lock yourself away from the world in fear of losing a friend?
you won't regret the love and companionship of a kitty--
you could name it SOUL!

what a cool name for a cat!
i never thought of naming an animal soul before.

anyhow---

let me know if you do get one.
mutts make the best kitties-- expensive pedigree cats are snobs... :))

what kind are you thinking about???

happy weekend..

Hallos Amel,

We shall see how it goes! At the moments, it's hubs that is hesitating about this pet idea more than me!

How was your weekend!

WaterLearner said...

Hi Nafa!

Good Advice Indeed! At least I could do my part to add colour to the short lifespan of the kitty?

I think we would probably go ahead with this Plan Kitty. But the final decision lies on my hubs :-)

WaterLearner said...

Hallos Jeanne,

You love cats too! :-)

WaterLearner said...

Hi Marz!

You would be happy to know that I gave in to my hubby's request to keep a cat after seeing so many of your many adorable cat pictures in your good blog!

:-)

WaterLearner said...

Yozz Bobo!

How are you doing? Looking forward to your honey coming back to Singapore huh!

Yups, I would give it real serious thinking. It's a creature with life. Having a pet takes more than interest and enthusiasm. It involves responsibility as well.

WaterLearner said...

Wow Juliana!

You are a cat lover too?!

WaterLearner said...

Wow Bobby!

I did not know you love cats too! Which breed is your favourite?

My weekend has been WONDERFUL! I've been busy today, so only have time to blog-hop now he he...How's your apartment? You must be looking forward to living there later he he he...Home sweet home!!!

Hi Karen,

I remembered during my younger days, I love to feed stray cats with bread that I take to school for breakfast. Anyway, I don't keep any cats or dogs at home. The only pet at home are my children's hamsters. You are right.. having a pet takes more than interest and enthusiasm. It involves responsibility as well.

BTW, congratulations to you for the coming new apartment. You must be really eager to move in to your new apartment - right? :-)

Blessings to you, Karen.

Yozz Soul!

Glad that you and Soulman had a great weekend! Read my latest post! I spent the Sunday playing Cranium over at a friend's place. I love board games!

WaterLearner said...

Hi Amel,

My apartment should be ready for moving in soon. Maybe a month's time. The renovation has to be halted due to the Chinese New Year holidays. But I am not rushing.

I really look forward to moving in!

WaterLearner said...

Hi Sam,

Yups. If I do keep a pet, I must be sure that I can give it a good home and be ready to take good care of it!

And yups! My new apartment is in progress of renovation. I really look forward to staying on my own. I get along well with my in-laws who are really very nice and accommodating people. They treat me like their own daughter. But having some space and privacy would be good. Plus my new apartment would be just opposite my in-laws' new apartment as well. So we are always close but never too close.

Have a Great Week Sam!!
