We had a family gathering last Saturday to celebrate my mom's birthday this coming Tuesday. It was during this lighthearted moment that my sister-in-law narrated the following to us.
When my nephew Benjamin (the older son of my brother) was about three years old, he saw a pair of dentures belonging to my dad. I guess it was during one of those nights that my dad had gone to bed early and had left his dentures to soak in some solution in a glass.
When my then three-year-old nephew saw the "teeth" floating in the glass of water, he was filled with total amazement. He asked his mom (my sis-in-law) what that was, pointing to the glass with his small index finger.
His mom said,"Grandpa's teeth."
His eyes opened wide as he walked closer to investigate Grandpa's detachable "teeth".
After "investigating" for a few moments, he ran back to his mom and asked,
"Mummy! ... Where is the tongue?"
****
The above narration brought laughter to my family during the dinner and contemplation to me after that. I realize that much as we often embrace sophistication in the world today, it is the simple inquiring mind that sometimes asks questions that no one could think of. As I recall back, the very much simpler and lesser complicated mind of mine during my younger days had been very much less burdened with unnecessary worries and cares.

Hey Karen, what a post. It left me thinking...When I was young, there was nothing to ask for from the world. As I was fed and got to play, that was all that mattered- the rest of the day was doing what my parents let me do.
As I reached about 12, it was still simple- doing what the parents tell you to do,and allow you to do. Of course now more complicated, as I wanted a handphone, to play computer etc, but everything was still simple, nothing much that I wanted material-wise or that I thought would satisfy me.
However as I got older, I realize I need things from the world to satisfy me. I am not satisfied with that (LOL!). I think that when I was young, I desired nothing complicated and was very happy, and relaxed.
however, now as I yearn more from this earth, I worry more and worry whether I can get things that were not important to me.
Why? I think it's the world we live in. We must remember to ignore the stuff that 'normal' people desire, and instead on what is truly important.
We do not live here on earth forever. Going out, having popularity or earning big money that u loathe to spend will not bring happiness. I hope all of us, me included, can be satisfied when we yearn nothing, like a little kid.
As one says, "we entered the world naked, with nary a nappy. What can the world owe us, when we are dressed and alive?'
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to your Mom!!!
You're right about kids...they do ask unthinkable questions and say unthinkable statements he he he...
Ahhhh...to have a more simplistic mind he he he he...;-D
However, I think I'm simpler now than I used to be. I THINK so, but let me think about it first he he he...
LOL!!!!!!
Aren't children the best!
So much curiosity and wonder!
Thanks for this and warm wishes to your mother!
Hugs,
Jen
I LOVE your new header Karen! It is lovely!
Hi Aaron,
I will convey your wishes to her.
Thanks for your visit and comments. I appreciate that.
Yes Jan. He was so curious first to find his grandpa's teeth being detachable. Then he realised that the tongue was not detached! Haha..
Hi Winston,
I see that you do have your own set of Theory on Simplicity! Bravo!
Amel,
Then we must communicate more. I hope to simplify my thinking! Give me tips!
Hi Jen,
Indeed, their curiosities can really awe me at times! I like to talk to children. They are so full of funny questions and most importantly, they wear no masks.
Thanks for your wishes to my mum's birthday.
So true...what I wouldn't do to be a kid again! ;) Have a great Monday Karen! :):):)
This made me smile ;) You're right - we need to recapture the wisdom of our youth - that questioned, and asked, and was never afraid to say "I dont know".
Warmest wishes to your Mum and to you,
With Love, M
Eh Karen, if it's different from yours, do share hor. Want to hear your views.
Hey Genie Princess!
Nice to see you here. Cheers up my Monday a little :-)
Maithri!!
Good to see you again here! Thanks for leaving your kind comments! It is an encouragement to my shallow blog.
Winston,
The world is more beautiful because of the presence of different colours. We gain wisdom from one another because we have different views.
Ah, we seem to lose that child-like wonder as we grow older... and get all serious and stressed up.
Ting,
That is true. Personally, I feel that I am burdening myself down too much by too many things purely beyond my control as I grow older.
Hope to free myself and be child-like again. Hence this post.
Happy Monday!
Happy Birthday, waterlearner's mom.
Kids look at all things through different eyes. It's only when you get older that we start to lose that curiosity we had as little children.
Hahaha...thanks for sharing, Karen! Adorable story and adorable nephew! Happy birthday to ur mom!
Hi Nick!
Yeah! If only one could increase the wisdom that age brings and yet maintain the enthusiastic curiosity when we were young.
thanks for coming by!
Hi Emila,

Yo MT,
Wow .. 100 posts already? .. I am coming over!!
Hehe... thanks for a good laugh!
Children can indeed bring lots of laughter because of their simple mind. I remembered during my younger day, my sister also gave us a good laugh when she asked mum whether it is right that Indian was dark-skin because they got burned by the sunshine :-)
May your mum have a great birthday celebration!
Blessings to you, Karen.
Hi Sam,
Haha .. Wow, they must really be standing for a long time in the sun to achieve that kind of tan!
Thanks for sharing this with me.
Thanks for your wishes to my mum.
