Spiritual Facial

I went for a facial this afternoon. Guys! I know what you are thinking, rest assured this post is not about beauty or cosmetics and girly things. This is also not a sponsored post for some cosmetics. Please have patience to finish this post. Don't click on the next site on your blogroll, please.
*
It has been three months since my last facial. Most girls (who do facial on a regular basis) would know what I had gone through this afternoon.
*
The facial started with the normal cleansing of surface dirt. That took less than five minutes. What that followed immediately was the most dreaded, albeit necessary, part of any facial - the squeezing of pimples and black heads. I have no idea how long this portion took. Einstein was right --- that felt like infinity.
*
After this painful process of squeezing and ridding of dirt below the surface was done, I was given a good face and shoulder massage using aromatherapy oil. Such relaxation! Last but not least, I enjoyed a half hour cold mask on my face for hydration and hot-mud mask for my eyes.
*
Has WaterLearner decided to setup a Spa and rallying for customers here? Yes! Indeed you are right! I am talking about Spiritual Facial here.
*
When was the last time I had undergone any Spiritual Facial? When was the last time I cleaned my inner being? The first and most basic step of Spiritual Facial is the same and just as easy to bear as any facial. It's about surface cleaning. We call this Courtesy or Manners.
*
There is also a dreaded part of Spiritual Facial equivalent to the squeezing and pinching of black heads and pimples. This most painful portion is to pluck the seeds in us planted by our longtime and powerful companion called the Ego. He is most fond of planting seeds that bloom into juicy fruits of Anger, Greed, Delusion ... among many others. Facing and taming this Ego maintains the most challenging part of Spiritual Facial ... to me.
*
Unfortunately but very much truly, unless the Ego inside us is being "treated", no goodness of any spiritual nourishment of any form can have long-lasting effort on us. Just as the lady who cleansed my face this afternoon had patiently explained to me,"If these dirt accumulated under your skin surface is not removed, no amount of goodness applied to your skin surface could be absorbed.".
*
Once we are aware of the works of our Ego and make effort to overcome it from creating too much havoc, then all experiences in life serve as nourishment to benefit us as we look at them with a learner's innocent eyes.

OOOHHH I know EXACTLY what you mean about facial. I called all women who loved facials as "masochistic beings" HA HA HA...Because it's true!

Anyway, when it comes to spiritual cleansing. I'd been struggling with it the past few days...only today I received enlightenment (and hopefully freedom from my Ego). It's not easy to free ourselves from our ego...you have to do it repeatedly (just like facials, eh?). I hope at least I'll do better and better as time goes by. It's really killing me sometimes when my ego kicks in. Wish I could kill it once and for all he he he he he he he...

Hi Karen...

I like this.. very nice analogy my friend!

I'm going to be thinking about your post the next time I head for the spa... AND, I will keep the thought in my mind to take care of my spirit as I do my face!

Thanks for this nice post!

Jen

What an interesting way of exploring that often sensitive entity, the ego!

I think of destroying one's ego as the first baby steps towards enlightenment. It must be eliminated as a poison of the soul.

People think things like a high-end life style and their reputations as being important. These are signs of spiritual immaturity.

It's funny how a sage will strive to be a child in so many ways. To have that open minded inquisitiveness and an empty mind which craves "knowing".

We get older and start thinking we know and our glass not only becomes full, it's full of mud. When we die we will be the same as when we were born. We are nothing but ourselves.

I lost everything I owned in hurricane Katrina except the clothes I was wearing and some items I had wrapped in sheets of plastic. I surprised myself because it never crossed my mind that I lost anything because I was alive.

Just being alive, is that one thing we take for granted. It's enough to get me up in the morning and take in a deep breath of air, rejoicing that I am alive!!!!! Great post Karen!

Hi Amel,

I admire your quest for enlightenment. Do guide me with tips to put spirituality into practice. I am truly a learner in this world.

Blessings & Have a Good Weekend!!

Jennifer,

Thanks for understanding my intention for this post. If our eyes are alert enough, everyday routines can serve as usual tools of inner reflection. Like a clear mirror point to one which part of the face needs cleaning.

Let me know your reflections during your next facial ok?

Have a Good Weekend!

Hi Bobby!

Indeed, I can really feel it in me! As I get older, there seem to be a BIG VOICE inside me ready to tell the world I KNOW BEST! This is the voice of Ego. And like how you have very appropriately described, very often, our glass is not filled with goodness but mud instead. Burdening us down and making us quite a "stink" among others.

I did not know you were a victim of Hurricane Katrina?! You lost everything you had? Oh my! It must have been a very scary and devastating experience. Have you written a post on this? I would very very much want to read about how you walked through that. If you have not written, could I "tagged" you to write about it? I am sure many readers of your good blog would welcome that.

So Bobby, is my wish granted?

Have a Blessed Weekend Bobby!

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the reminder.

Just like we need to take bath everyday, we also need to have a nice cleansing spiritually. Let's remember NOT to hold on to anger, hurt or pain. They steal our energy and keep us from love.

Best Wishes

Karen, what a perfect analogy you post here!

Reading this post makes me want to wash my face! haha.. anyway, I hate facial.. it hurts!

Yup, our Ego is something difficult to fight, indeed. And you are very true, our ego blocks something good to be revealed from our life! For me, it is impossible to get rid of that ego without divine power of God as we are sinful in nature. Without God's strength we will be exhausted in our never ending efforts..

Good post, Karen! I subscribe you via my email so I will not miss any post from you!

To treat our Ego in our heart is not an easy thing. Experiences of fail can slowly help us to control our Ego. This is what I think of la..

Ok, for facial, I really need a facial and massage.. Long time not go for that already...

Hi Karen...

The gals at NAFA here have been dying to go for facial. Hehe! Perhaps u should start setting up a facial spa and then we can be your customers. =)

I need shiatsu today! That would be a dream!

I watched a TV program about how men, because they shave, exfoliate their skin every day!

I am so lucky because my father had bad acne as a teen and always had skin problems, but I do not. I take after his sister, my Aunt Beverly. She is 66 years old and looks 35. She has beautiful deep violet coloured eyes!

I didn't get the gene for violet eyes though, I wish I had. She is so youthful and pretty, it's hard to believe she's over 40! I hope I look young in my 60's but that is vanity, and part of the ego!

We are all human, and we cannot be perfect. I learned long ago to forgive myself for letting myself feel the ego. As a human, it is only natural to be enticed by beauty and youthfulness.

No matter what we are, we must ultimately love ourselves. I am truly happy to be alive, on this wondrous planet and to have great friends like you! Have a great day Karen:)

Hi Trin!

I am glad I took the opportunity of reflecting on my Ego while doing my facial. Believe it or not, as I contemplated on the difficulties of taming my Ego while the squeezing was done, it actually distracted me a little and I left less pain!

Thanks for subscribing my blog via Email. I am honoured.

Nice day to you Trin!! Good luck on your Tribute to Dads Project. Let me know what I can do to help more.

Blessings!

Hi Kee Yit!

You are very right. Much as we hate failures and setbacks, they actually serve as a good remedy for the Problem of Big Ego!

It is often through failing that one gets more mellowed.

I appreciate your wise comments!

Blessings to you Kee Yit!

Hi Bobby!

Oh how I envy your good skin inheritance! Making us girls all jealous!

Thanks for adding the important point of accepting ourselves. Our Ego is a part of us. I am not sure if a human can really exisit without an Ego! Like I mentioned in the blog, one should make efforts to ensure the our Ego does not create too much havoc!

The point on loving ourselves is also very important. Bobby, we live in the world today whereby advertisements around us all serve to remind that we are just not good enough. The ad for slimming is telling us that we are too fat. The ad for cosmetics tells us that we should cover up those shortcomings on our face. With such massive signals being sent to us everyday, it is no wonder that it is easy to forget to love ourselves as we are!

Yes! Just being alive is worth celebrating! And no matter what size, shape and profile we come in, we are all a part of this world! It is being different and being ourselves that we can call ourselves "Just Me!".

Thanks Bobby! That's a good one. How about putting up a post in your good blog with title, "Accepting Ourselves"?

Have a Good Tuesday!

hi ! you're also named Karen ? Sigh. How's that for being unique ?!!

the only thing I can say about facials are : wait till you see you face the next few days after !!

having said that, I met a very clever housewife once who was earning money selling MLM cosmetic/ facial products but she didn't really sell them. She actually did home facials, using the products. So she earned from the facials. And for customers who wanted to buy, she earned from selling the products to them ! All in her own time.

It's a freak occurence. When you leave any blog a comment, after you click publish comment, wait until the page is COMPLETELY refreshed before leaving! Blogspot (your host) has a ripple every now and again; as in life!

Done with my post Karen. It is entitled "Tales of BloggerX"! Enjoy:)

There is this amazing book called 'The Heart of Darkness' which is a symbolic story about the journey to the deepest corners of ones self.
This journey is very difficult because it requires the utmost courage to be able to honestly see the darkness that is inside all of us. To recognize what our flaws are and to accept them without giving any justifications or rationalizations. And after accepting that they exist, trying to conquer them. Because even though you may know what your bad points are it is often difficult to combat them.

hi karen, it's been ages since my last facial. yeah, i agreed on the wholle process with you.. the most relaxing part is the ending, which i often fall asleep.

unlike in my spiritual facial, i think i had this quite often. Each otime before i sleep, i think back of the things i do or said during the whole day and did i said or do anything evil. If i did, i asked God for forgiveness, often it is my anger. thanks for sharing. It's alot easier to digest outting it in this way! :)

Hi Karen,

I am actually reluctant to go for a facial (not only because it is quite 'face losing' to go for one for guys) but all the pimple popping just...isn't for me. Anyway, i clean my face everyday using a cleaner.

coming back to my point. Many (myself included) are reluctant to let go of our pride (aka face).

We clinged on to it no matter what (don't believe me, try suggesting to a person that his or her attires/clothes are not matching. ok ok not a good example...). Pride is a sin according to the bible as it elevate a person above God.

We have to let go of Pride and let God prevail in the situation. Maybe then we will not sweat over small matters, no conflicts will arise fropm petty incidents and there can be harmony.

Good post, Karen! You are so good in writing that You should come up with your own "Chicken soup" book.
Cheers!
